Modernizing an Insurance Core Platform: Multi-channel Configuration and a Safe Cutover

Modernization is more than changing the stack

An insurance core platform owns orders, products, marketing and user services. Each distribution channel may bring its own product configuration, promotion rules and page journey. Moving legacy code to a new framework would simply preserve the same complexity.

The first step was therefore domain analysis: deciding which rules belong to products, which belong to marketing and which variations should stay in a channel adapter. A shared model is useful only when its boundaries remain clear.

Designing a period of parallel operation

A single cutover concentrates every risk at one moment. A controlled parallel period lets both paths process comparable business data while the team establishes a clear route for investigating differences.

  • Assign ownership and direction for each category of data.
  • Add traceable reconciliation points around critical states.
  • Include timeouts, duplicate messages and partial failure in the transition design.
  • Document where a business rule comes from, not only the fields of an API.

The H5 journey belongs to the domain

The marketing experience is not a separate attachment to the platform. Product configuration, page rendering, user behavior and conversion form one business journey. Event tracking should answer a defined question—such as where users leave—instead of collecting events without purpose.

What I took away

Modernization is ultimately about lowering the cost of future change. Technology matters, but shared context, verifiable migration and visible failure paths matter more.
